You do not need a digital camera to take advantage of the ability of the computer to edit photos. Continuous improvement of scanners made cheaper and easier to turn photos into digital images that you can enhance, resize, and share. And flatbed scanners are no longer restricted to printed originals. Our tests show that the best plates are now a match for film scanners expensive when it comes to scanning slides and negatives. This is no small matter, reflecting the improvement in resolution that new scanners deliver and better accessories to hold film strips or slides securely for Sharp, accurate scans.
WHAT'S AVAILABLE
A number of scanners come from companies, including Microtek and Visioneer, who made their name in scanning technology. Other brands include PC makers and professionals like Canon, Epson, Hewlett-Packard and Nikon.
What type of scanner you should consider - flat sheet, or film - depends largely on how you use it. If you're short of space, consider a multifunction device.
Flatbed scanners. Over 90 percent of the scanners on the market are plateaus. They work well for text, graphics, photos, and everything is flat, including the final design of a kindergartner. Flatbeds include optical character recognition (OCR) software that translates words on a printed page in a word processing file on your computer. It also includes basic software for image editing. Some stores may take a flatbed scanner free or a few dollars more, when you buy a desktop computer.
A key specification for a scanner is its maximum optical resolution, measured dots per inch (dpi). You'll pay more for a higher resolution.
Price range: under $ 100 for 600x1, 200 dpi $ 100 to $ 500 models with better resolution.
Sheet-fed models. sheet models can automatically scan a stack of loose sheets, but they sometimes damage pages that pass through their bowels. And they can not analyze anything much thicker than a sheet of paper (which means old photo might be too thick). IMPORTANT FEATURES
Although the image quality of a scanner produces depends in part on the software included with it, there are several hardware devices to consider.
You begin the scan by running the driver software supplied with the scanner or by pressing a preprogrammed button. Models with buttons automate routine tasks for you, use your scanner as you would other office equipment. On some models, you can customize the functions of the buttons. Each of these tasks can be performed by the scanner software without using buttons. A copy button / Printing starts a scan and sends a command to print the results on your printer, effectively making the two devices act as a photocopier. Other functions of the buttons available on some models scan to file, scan to fax modem, scan to email, Scan to Web, scan to OCR cancel scanning, saving energy, start the scanner software, and on / off.
You can also start driver from an application like a word processor, that adheres to an industry standard known as TWAIN. Scanner driver software lets you preview a scan on the screen and crop it or adjust contrast and brightness. Once you are satisfied with the image modified, you can perform a final inspection and move the image to run a program or save it to your computer. You can make more extensive changes to an image with an image editing software specialist. And read the text of a book or a letter in a file word processing on your computer, you run OCR software.
Many documents combine text with graphics, such as photographs and drawings. A feature of the software at hand that can be found on many scanners, called multi-scan mode, you can break these hybrids into different sections that can be treated separately in a single scan. You can designate, for example, that sections of an article magazine that is going to plain text OCR software independently of the graphic elements of the article. Other scanners would require a separate scan for each section of the document.
Some models come with adapters for flat film designed to scan film or slides, but if you need to scan from film or slides often, you're better off having a separate film scanner.
HOW TO CHOOSE
Consider how much resolution you need. If you want a scanner only for original prints, mainly interested in models that offer of 1,200 dots per inch (dpi), they are usually the cheapest models. You can still set a scanner to work unless its resolution Max. In fact, most scans of photos, graphics and text, just 150 to 300 dpi. (To view images on the screen, 75 dpi will suffice.) Do not sweat the quality and speed. Most scanners we've tested recently were considered very good according their ability to reproduce a color photo to a maximum optical resolution. The rest was considered good, meaning that their tests were less net with colors less accurate.
The speed is if you expect to scan regularly. In our recent tests, the fastest took about 10 seconds to scan an 8x10 inches at 300 dpi, while the slowest need about 40 seconds.
