Chinese portable fan
A fan is a handheld tool used to induce airflow for cooling or refreshing oneself. Any large flat surface and waved back and forth will create a small airflow and therefore can be considered a rudimentary fan. But generally, purpose-made hand fans are shaped like a sector of a circle made of a thin material (such as paper or feathers) mounted on slats which revolve around a pivot so it can be closed when not in use.The movement of a handheld fan provides cooling by increasing airflow to the skin which in turn increases the evaporation rate of drops of sweat on the skin. This evaporation a cooling effect due to the latent heat of vaporization of water.
Fans are easy to carry around, and the type of fold in particular, are compact to carry.
portable fan
In China, the fans were used throughout the screen countries. The earliest known Chinese fans are a pair of woven bamboo side-mounted fans of the 2nd century BC. The Chinese character for "fan" (扇) is etymologically derived from an array of feathers under one roof. The Chinese fixed fan, pien-mien, means' to shake air.
.
Fans were part of the social status for the Chinese people. A particular status and gender would accord a specific type fan for an individual. During the Song Dynasty, famous artists are often commissioned to paint images on the surface of a fan.
The folding fan was invented in Japan in the 8th century and taken to China in the 9th century. The Akomeogi (or Japanese fan folding; 衵 扇; Hiōgi) origin in the 6th century. These fans were detained by the aristocrats of the Heian period when formally dressed. They were made by tying thin stripes of hinoki (Japanese cypress or) with the wire. The number of strips of wood differed according to the rank of the person. They are now used by Shinto priests in formal costume and the official costume of the Japanese court (they can be seen used by the Emperor and Empress at the coronation and marriage) and are brightly painted with long tassels. Chinese fan dance was developed in the 7th century. The Chinese form fan in her hand a row of feathers mounted on the end of a handle.
In China, the folding fan became the fashion during the Ming Dynasty, between the years 1368 and 1644, and Hangzhou was a center of production folding fan. The Ogi May (or fan Chinese dance) has ten sticks and a thick paper mount showing the family coat of arms. Chinese painters designed many models of decorative fans. The slats, of ivory, bone, mica, pearl, sandalwood, or tortoise shell, were carved and covered with paper or fabric. Fans folding have "frames" which are the sticks and guards. The leaves are usually painted by artisans. The social significance has been attached to the ventilator Far East. The fan control has become a highly feminine art. The function and use the fan reached its high point of social significance (the Fans have even been used as a weapon - called the iron fan, or a tie Shan Chinese, Japanese tessen). Simple Japanese paper fans are sometimes known as "harisen. In Japanese current pop culture, Harisen are also frequently in animation and fiction graphics as weapons.
Printed fan leaves and painted fans are done on a lot of paper. The document was hand-made and displayed the characteristic watermarks. Machine made paper fans, introduced in the 19th century, are smoother with an even texture.
Folding fans (扇子 Japanese "sensu", Chinese "Shanz") continue to be important cultural symbols and tourist souvenirs popular in East Asia. Geisha of all types (but maiko usually) use fans in their fan dances.

The archaeological ruins show that Fans have been used in ancient Greece. In Europe, the Middle Ages, the fan was missing. first fans of Christian Europe was the flagellum (or ceremonial fan), which dates from the 6th century. These services were used to drive the insects away from the consecrated bread and wine. Their use died in western Europe during the Middle Ages, but continues in the Eastern Orthodox and Ethiopian churches. fans hand were reintroduced in Europe in the 13th century and 14th century. Fans of the Middle East were brought back by the Crusaders. In the 15th century, Portuguese traders had fans in Europe from China and Japan. Fans became generally popular.
In the 1600s the folding fan, introduced from China, became popular in Europe. These fans are particularly well displayed in the portraits of women of high birth at the time. Queen Elizabeth 1st of England can be seen to carry two fans decorated with pom poms on their guardsticks and the fan of a more rigid style often decorated with feathers and jewels. These rigid style fans often hung on the skirts of the ladies, but fans of that era is that most exotic of folding who survived. Fans of the 15th century folding in museums today have either leather leaves with cut out designs forming a lace pattern or more rigid leaf with inlays of exotic materials like mica. A feature of these fans is the bone or ivory rather crude sticks and how the leaves are often split leather on the stick rather than glued as with the fans after folding. Fans fully decorated sticks without "sheet" of a broken fan were known as fans. However, despite the relative crude methods of folding fan construction were at this era of high status, exotic items along with gloves to prepare gifts to royalty.
In 17th century, the rigid fan which was seen in portraits of the previous century had fallen out of favor as folding fans gained dominance in Europe. Fans started to display well painted leaves, often with a religious or classical subject. The drawback of these early fans also began to display floral develop. The sticks are often raw ivory or tortoiseshell, sometimes inlaid with gold or silver pique work. How The sticks sit close together, often with little or no space between them is one of the distinguishing characteristics of fans that time.
In 1685 the Edict of Nantes was revoked in France. This caused large scale immigration from France to neighboring countries Protestants (as England) Craftsman many fans. This dispersion in skill is reflected in the quality of increasingly many fans of these non-French after that date.
In the 18th century, fans have achieved a high degree of art and have been deployed throughout Europe often by specialized craftsmen, either in leaves or sticks. Folded fans of lace, silk, or parchment were decorated and painted by artists. Fans were also imported from China by the East India companies right now. Around 1700 East inventors started designing mechanical fans. Wind-up fans (even the wind clocks) were popular in the 1700s. In the 19th century, West, European fashion caused fan decoration and size vary.
It has been said that in the courts of England, Spain and elsewhere fans were used in a more or less secret, the unwritten code of messages [1] These languages were fans a way to against restricting social etiquette. However, modern research has proved that it was just a marketing ploy developed the 18th century - one that has kept its remarkable attraction during the following centuries. This is now used for marketing by the fan makers as Duvelleroy in London who has produced a series of advertisements in the 1960s showing "the language of the fan" with models displaying antique fans with this "language".
