Markets Under Pressure
A great bear market rally, rally back, or "just get us out of here": whatever the reason, get up late Friday on Wall Street, it will be known as the "rebound Geithner in the years to come.
The market started Friday looking to go lower after two pummeling day had left the Standard & Poor's 500 at the lower of 11 years.
But the ballots news, then in the afternoon said that Timothy Geithner, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, would be named Treasury Secretary. It was the point man for the Fed during the crisis between when he started in August 2007.
This appointment was confirmed yesterday and will be officially announced tonight in the United States.
Lawrence Summers, a former deputy Treasury secretary under President Clinton will be an advisor White House economic. He will head the National Economic Council.
Mr. Summers will advise Mr. Obama to the White House and direct response the financial and economic crisis in all federal agencies.
These are just people, no major events economy evolves, but it shows that the power is back in vogue in Washington.
Do not expect to stick rebound, but it does show the positive aspects make wise choices in cabinet positions, the key economic portfolios in particular U.S. presidents. The pity is it took eight years to realize.
The news of the economic team is taking shape for the new administration also provides very sharp focus for the clumsy yet incompetent running U.S. economic policy, led by Hank Paulson, who alone has given us another banking crisis in the making by his decision earlier this month (years Administration) not to buy Titles troubled mortgage-related, but to help the credit card, student loans and car loan sectors.
It allowed short hedge fund slaughter of a day on the ground to attack U.S. bank stocks.
The decision has greatly contributed to sale in the banking and financial services (such as insurers) last week and a bit, with Citigroup head down 60% last week, 35% at one point Friday before late rebound that trimmed the loss to 20%.
The Dow jumped 494.13 points, or 6.54%, to 8046.42, the Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 47.59 points, or 6.32%, and just made the mark of 800 to 800.03. Nasdaq climbed 68.23 points, or 5.18%, to 1384.35.
There was a time significantly different or if the two previous days, the Dow Jones lost 10.4% Wednesday and Thursday sessions, its worst percentage drop in two days to more than 20 years.
For the week, the Dow lost 5.3%, the S & P 500 fell 8.4% and the Nasdaq lost 8.8%.
The week capped a dismal history in November, which quickly became one of the worst months for U.S. equities since October 1987.
Including On Friday, the S & P is down over 17% for the month to date, the Dow is off almost 14% and the Nasdaq is nearly 20% less than the crisis begins to spread its damage on the pillars of a point like Dell, Intel and Google.
Investors are emerging on the appointment of enough interesting Geithner to set aside the uncertainty surrounding the giants Citigroup and Car, General Motors and Ford.
GM and Ford recovered earlier losses to close up 6.3% to $ US3.06, and 2.9% at $ US1.43, respectively. Citigroup ended Friday at $ US3.77. Shares hit a low of $ US3.05 least one point
Wal-Mart Stores increased 4.5% to $ US52.92 after the world's largest retailer has surprised the market by revealing that, after nine years, Lee Scott has retired as CEO and named Mike Duke, head of international operations of Wal-Mart, as his successor.
The SPI has our market up a little over 100 points today in the morning, closed on Saturday. The Australian dollar reached 63.20 cents in late negotiation. Oil and gold were also higher. our market was down 9% last week, a big drop to that small rebound on Friday
