The Basics
Inkjet printers print by injecting the liquid ink from a small reservoir on a page. Although this is a kind of simplified description of the technology at its core, this is what happens. Using four and sometimes more, reservoirs separated for each color of ink, these printers are able to blend harmoniously tens of thousands of colors together.
Other laser hand is something totally different. Laser printing works by changing the polarity of a photosensitive drum in certain areas so that the ink powder (toner) of opposite charge to keep. The drum is then rolled onto a page to create an image. It works the same way for both printing black and white and color.
What is good for me?
Which technology really depends on two factors: what you print most of the time and how much you're willing to spend. This article is aimed squarely at the middle of the market, not at the margin, so I will not talk printing photographs or premium business users superpowers. If you're one of those customers, you probably know what you need. All the world, read on.
Inkjet printers, which are always in color, are much more suitable for printing photos and graphics. Although they can make the text, it is widely felt that the text is not as clear on inkjet print on a laser. It because, although technology has progressed, the liquid ink spreads a bit as it absorbs into the paper. This can result in "blurred edges". How fuzzy depends on many factors, including paper, type of ink used, and the printer itself. But this is not always a bad thing and in fact, these printers are designed to operate that way.
As I said, inkjet printers are very suitable for printing pictures and photos, you want the colors to blend harmoniously with one another. Think on a cloudless blue sky. It can be darker on one side of the picture than the other, but you do not want the colors to stop mid-term and sudden change. Want a progressive fusion. This is where Inkjet really shine.
Photos and graphics, on the other hand, are where lasers are struggling. This does not mean they can not produce them, but they are certainly not as rich and vibrant with a jet of ink (at least not at the consumer level). laser printers, which are available in two models in black and white and color, the brand has really touched when it comes to text, both quality and speed.
Because of how the laser printer works, it can operate at speeds that can not be reproduced by inkjet. The laser only "write" information to the drum once, then a drum roll on as many pages must be printed. Inkjets need to move the print head, line by line on each page. In addition, because the information is written on the drum by a laser (see: extremely accurate) and because the ink sticks for the laser spots touched, everything is sharp as a tack. This statement does not lend itself well to mixing Color photograph, but for the text, it can not be beaten.
The second factor is the cost
For years, companies that make inkjet printers have operated under the "give the razor and make money on the blades" model. Many Printer companies will actually be a loss on the printer itself because the margin of the ink (or "consumables" in industry jargon) is so high. They know that once you have this printer, you can imagine this for years and you have to buy their brand of ink. Although Statistics vary from printer to printer page output to inkjet printers are typically measured in hundreds per cartridge.
On the other hand, the page output to a printer laser toner cartridge is typically measured in thousands. Because the toner cartridges are much larger (they are stationary relative to an ink cartridge), the ink can contain much more per pack. This means that the per-print cost of a laser printer is much less.
So what do I do?
Take a look at what you are most printing time. Are you printing a large number of photos at home? Are you printing web pages? Are you typing letters or forms? Do not necessarily think that you can print as that is how you get suckered. Looking all printers Inkjet low market prices, you think you can print your holiday cards at home or make t-shirts. The problem is, that Once you consider the cost of ink, it usually ends up being cheaper to buy your cards on the store!
This does not saying you should not buy an inkjet printer, the majority of people do (I have one at home). If you want to print photos the original color or need for presentations or reports, an inkjet is an excellent device.
On the other hand, if you are an occasional printer (directions from MapQuest, a grocery list, e-mail) a black and white laser printer is a great, low cost option. You get a high page output per cartridge and the ink dries up (which can happen if you do not use your inkjet that often). Think how much you really need to print in color. I bet it's not that often.
So study your needs, see costs (both out throughout the life of the product) and make an intelligent decision. If you do this, you can not go wrong.
