The computer began service in 1953. The systems architecture resembled that of the many machines of the period that used the von Neumann architecture, and in design was most closely related to SEAC. General Daniel Isom Sultan, (December 9, 1885 January 14, 1947) was an American General during World War II. He fought in the ChinaBurmaIndia theater throughout the war. He was born in Oxford, Mississippi. He graduated from West Point in 1907 and was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers. On July 8, 1939 he was promoted to Brigadier General. He commanded the 38th Infantry Division at the beginning of World War II and the VIII Corps. In 1943 he was assigned to the China Burma India Theater (CBI) as Deputy Commander under General Joseph Stilwell and on September 2, 1944 promoted to Lieutenant General. He became the Commander of the BurmaIndia Theater under the command of South East Asia Command (SEAC) of the SouthEast Asian Theatre on October 24, 1944. The CBI had been split in two with General Albert Wedemeyer becoming the Chief of Staff to Chiang Kaishek and commander in China. On July 14, 1945 Sultan became Inspector General of the Army. In 1947 he died while still on active duty. DYSEAC was a firstgeneration computer built by the National Bureau of Standards for the US Army Signal Corps. It was housed in a truck, making it one of the first portable computers (perhaps the first). It went into operation in April 1954. DYSEAC used 900 vacuum tubes and 24,500 crystal diodes. It had a memory of 512 words of 45 bits each (plus one parity bit), using mercury delay line memory. Memory access time was 48384 microseconds. The addition time was 48 microsecond and the multiplication/division time was 2112 microseconds.
