A screening test for colon cancer work by measuring
Examples of these organs are the breasts, uterus, vagina, skin, ovary and brain. Estrogen binds to receptors in breast cells and stimulates them to divide and replicate. This mechanism, on the other is disabled by tamoxifen as it attaches to estrogen receptors in the surface cells. A colon cancer screening test works by measuring with breast cancer cells that contain estrogen receptors, tamoxifen sends these cells into a cycle of programmed cell death or apoptosis.
Tamoxifen is administered orally, like other hormones. In addition to making breast cancer cells into apoptosis, it also acts like estrogen in other tissues and has a positive effect on bone metabolism. Tamoxifen, compared to estrogen stimulates the uterine lining more and the two substances are equally effective in retaining calcium from bones.
Several studies have shown that tamoxifen increases the cure rate of women with noninvasive breast cancer, but is still controversial in clinical use. The controversy is based on a recent clinical trial, which aimed to determine whether tamoxifen was effective in primary prophylaxis of breast cancer in high risk asymptomatic women. At the end of the trial, tamoxifen was treated with strict control and a large amount of negative press exaggerate its potential adverse effects for asymptomatic women. It is in fact no question that tamoxifen is a very powerful drug in the treatment of patients with breast cancer. Since the breast cancers are very heterogeneous, they do not develop the same way cell. About 60 percent of breast cancers contain estrogen and progesterone receptors, while others contain less. Tamoxifen appears to be more effective in women who have more of these hormone receptors in tumors than those who do not. On the other hand, within a given breast cancer, there may be cells that have hormone receptors more than others. Thus, the effect of tamoxifen on these conditions vary. It is also possible that over time, the cells of breast cancer who are receiving hormone positive change can and can not contain more hormone receptors. This may explain why women who receive combined treatment of chemotherapy and tamoxifen may have a better response to treatment with a therapy administered alone. In most cases, when chemotherapy and tamoxifen are given in a cancer patient, they are given sequentially, first, the chemotherapy is given to destroy the receptors hormone negative breast cancer cells and then with tamoxifen, which can then act on hormone receptor positive cells which may be less sensitive to chemotherapeutic agents.
In some cases, perimenopausal women seem to have difficulty with the use of tamoxifen. The Most postmenopausal women in their 30s and 40s have almost no side effects with tamoxifen and older women who are not on hormone replacement have little difficulty with the treatment of tamoxifen.
The main side effect of tamoxifen is uterine toxicity. Some women taking the drug have thickening of the endometrium, stimulation of the glandular mucosa of the uterus that can become cancerous if not unnoticed. The risk of developing cancer of the uterus following tamoxifen use is quite low, only about one percent. Nevertheless, the uterus must be closely monitored with either an ultrasound or biopsy of the endometrium during the annual pelvic exam if the patient is taking this drug.
Tamoxifen was the first selective modulator of estrogen receptors has been developed and used for over 20 years.
