Dream Theater
History
Training and early years (19851987)
The founding members (from left to right) John Myung, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci and 1985.
Dream Theater was formed in September 1985, when guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung decided to form a group in their spare time while studying at Berklee College of Music. The couple came across the drummer Mike Portnoy in one of the rehearsal Berklee, where he was invited to join the group. The trio began with Rush and Iron Maiden cover songs in the rehearsal rooms at Berklee.
Myung, Petrucci and Portnoy settled on the name Majesty for their newly formed group. According to the score of The So Far ... documentary, they waited in line tickets to a Rush concert at the Berklee Performance Center while listening to the tape on a boom box. Portnoy noted that the end of the "Bastille Day" song (from the album The caress of steel) sounded "majestic." It was then decided that Majesty would be the group's name.
The trio then proceeded to fill the remaining positions in the group. Petrucci asked his high school band-mate Kevin Moore on keyboards. After accepting the position, another friend from home, Chris Collins, was recruited as vocalist after band members heard him sing a cover of "Queen of the Reich" by Queensrche. Meanwhile, time crunch Portnoy, Petrucci and Myung them forced to abandon their studies to concentrate on their music because they do not feel they could learn more in college. Moore also left his college, SUNY Fredonia, to concentrate on the tape.

The months of 1986 were filled with various concert dates in and around the New York area. Meanwhile, the band recorded a collection of demos, titled The Majesty Demos. The initial print run of 1,000 sold within six months, and dubbed copies of the cassette became popular in the scene progressive metal. The Majesty Demos are still available in their original tape format today, despite being officially released on CD, thanks to Mike Portnoy's Records YtseJam.
In November 1986, after several months of writing and performing together, Chris Collins was fired. After a year of trying to find a replacement, Charlie Dominici, who was much older and more experienced than anyone in the group, successfully auditioned for the group. With the stability that Dominici's appointment brought to Her Majesty, they began to increase the number of shows played in the New York area, is gaining a considerable amount of exposure.
Shortly after hiring Dominici Las Vegas group also named Majesty threatened legal action for copyright infringement related to the use of their name, so the group was forced to adopt a new name. Various possibilities have been proposed and tested, among them Glasser, Magus, and M1, which were all rejected until Portnoy's father suggested the name Dream Theater, the name of a movie theater in Monterey, California.
When Dream and Day Unite (19881990)
Dream Theater 1989: John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Charlie Dominici Kevin Moore John Myung
With their new name and a stable band, Dream Theater concentrated on writing more material while playing more concerts in New York and in neighboring countries. This eventually attracted the attention of Mechanic Records, a division of MCA. Dream Theater signed their first recording contract with Mechanic on June 23, 1988 and set to record their first album. The band recorded the album at Victory Studios in Gladwyne Kajem, Pennsylvania. Record the basic tracks took about 10 days, and while the album was completed in about three weeks.
When Dream and Day Unite was released in 1989 with great fanfare less than the group had planned. Mechanic ended up breaking the majority of the financial commitments they made to Dream Theater before signing their contract, if the tape was restricted to playing around New York. The promotional tour for the album consists of only five concerts, all of which were relatively Local. Their first show was at Sundance in Bay Shore, New York opening for the classic rock power trio Zebra.
After fourth show, Dominici was fired because of personal and creative differences. Shortly thereafter, however, the band Marillion Dream Theater asked to open for them at a concert at the Ritz in New York to Dominici was given the opportunity to perform one last time. It would be another two years before Dream Theater had a replacement singer.

After firing Dominici, Dream Theater fought successfully to be released from their contract with Mechanic, and began to audition singers and writing material their next album. In their search for a new singer they auditioned over 200 people, including former Fates Warning front man John Arch, all were discharged down. In mid-1990, during a concert in New York, Dream Theater has presented Steve Stone as their new singer. He played only three songs with the group before he was fired for conduct less adequately. It was five months before Dream Theater has played another show This time all-instrumental (as YtseJam). Until 1991, the group remained focused in an attempt to hire another singer and writes music additional. It was during this period they wrote most of what became the 1992 images and words.
In January 1991, Kevin James LaBrie, glam metal band Winter Rose, was flown from Canada to New York for an audition. LaBrie jammed on three songs with the band, and was immediately hired to fill the position of vocalist. Once recruited, LaBrie decided to drop his first name to avoid confusion with others in the band Kevin. For months, the band returned to play shows (still mostly around New York), while working on parts of speech music written before acquiring LaBrie. Derek Shulman and ATCO Records (now EastWest), a division of Elektra Records, Dream Theater has signed a seven albums based on a model of three songs (later made available as "The ATCO Demos" by Dream Theater fan club).
The first album to be registered under their new record contract was between 1992 words and images. For promotion, the label released a CD single and video clip for the song "Another Day", but neither made substantial commercial benefits. The song "Pull Me Under", however, managed to collect a high level of radio airplay, without any promotion organized by the band or their label. In response, ATCO has produced a video for "Pull Me Under" which saw heavy rotation on MTV. A third video was produced to "take time", but it was not as successful as "Sweater Me Under. "
The success of "Pull Me Under", combined with constant touring throughout the U.S. and Japan, caused Images and Words to be certified gold album in the States and platinum status in Japan. A European tour followed in 1993, which included a show at Club Celebrates Marquee in London. The show was recorded and released as Live at the Marquee, Dream Theater official first live album. In addition, a video compilation of their Japanese concerts (mixed with documentary-style images of the part-off stage of the tour) was released as Images and Words: Live in Tokyo.

Willing to work on fresh material, Dream Theater withdrew into the studio in May 1994. Awake, Dream Theater third studio album, was released October 4, 1994, in a hail of controversy among fans. Shortly before the album was mixed, Moore announced to the rest of the band that was simply more interested in tourism, and he did not favor the style of music performed by Dream Theater Dream Theater would be leaving to concentrate on his own musical tastes. Accordingly, the group was struggling to find a replacement keyboardist before tour may be considered. The album was well received by both critics and fans. The album has been viewed by some as Dream Theater darkest album mainly because of the lyrical content with most songs dealing with internal conflicts. For example, "The Mirror" explores the theme alcohol, from which Portnoy was convalescing at the time.
Jens Johansson, who was to become a member of Stratovarius was among the biggest names in the hearing, but group members were eager to fill the position with keyboardist Jordan Rudess. Portnoy and Petrucci met Rudess in Keyboard Magazine, where he was recognized as "best new talent" in the reader survey. The two invited to play a concert with the trial group at the Forum of concrete foundations in Burbank, California. For members of Dream Theater, the show incredibly well, and Rudess was asked to serve as a permanent keyboardist, though Rudess chose to tour with The Dixie Dregs place because he has given greater personal freedom. Disappointed, Dream Theater hired fellow Berklee old Derek Sherinian, whose previous work included stints with Alice Cooper and Kiss, to be completed for the Awake promotional tour. By the conclusion of the tour, the group decided to take on Moore to replace Sherinian time full.

Once again end up with a new member, Dream Theater does not immediately start working on new material. Fans around the world gathered on the Mailing List YtseJam (the most popular form Communication between Dream Theater fans at this point), had begun to exert pressure on the band officially released the song "A Change of Seasons". It was written in 1989 and was intended to be part of the images and words, but nearly 17 minutes, it was considered too long for placement studio. However, the group did perform live on occasion while continuing to revise it in the years leading up to 1995.
The petition was successful and the group came BearTracker Studios in New York in May 1995 to rewrite and record the song 23 minutes Sherinian contribute significantly to the final product. To stream "A Change of Seasons", the band, he released an EP with a collection of covers recorded live at the concert to fan club short.
After a short journey from small concerts to promote a change of seasons Dream Theater took a break for a few months. To keep busy, however, the band released a Christmas CD through their official fan club, consisting of rare live tracks recorded during the early years of the group. They continued to release a new CD every Christmas until 2005. Also during the break, members individual destined to write compositions for their forthcoming sessions of collaborative writing.
Meanwhile, there have been several changes EastWest, and Dream Theater main contact within the label has been drawn. Consequently, the new team of the company were unaccustomed to the relationship with Dream Theater was EastWest former staff, and lobbied for Dream Theater to write an album that was more accessible. At mid-1997, they entered the studio to write their next album. And more pressure on the band adopt a more commercial sound, EastWest recruited screenwriter / producer Desmond Child to work with Petrucci on polishing the lyrics of his song "you or me." The whole band substantially reworked the music of the song, and has appeared on the album as "did you not" with a chorus that was barely thinking about the original. Children also had an impact noticeable on the album, with a shift towards compositions that were less complex and more radio-friendly.
The group wrote about two CDs worth of equipment, including a 20 minutes long-term monitoring for images and words song "Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper". The label, however, did not allow the release of a double album because he felt that a record of 140 minutes is not digestible by the general public. James LaBrie also felt that the CD should be a single disc. The songs used were released in News Ytsejam Falling Into The Records Infinity Demos.
The material he did on the album was released as good Falling Into Infinity, which received a mixed reception from fans who were more familiar with his earlier band. Although the album was moderately progressive sounding, songs like "Hollow Years" and "You Not Me" prompted some to believe it was the dawn of a new wave sounding Dream Theater. Overall, the album was both a critical and commercial disappointment. Although Portnoy did not speak publicly at the time, years later, 2004 DVD in the commentary for the 5 years in a Livetime, he revealed he was so discouraged during this period, he considered quite dissolution Dream Theater.
During the European leg of the tour Touring the world of the infinite, two shows were recorded for a live album entitled Once in a LiveTime, France and the Netherlands. The album was released at about the same time as the video 5 years in a Livetime, which chronicles the time from when Kevin Moore left the group to tour the Falling Into Infinity promos.
Scenes from a Memory Metropolis 2000 (19992001)
In 1997, Magna Carta Records' Mike Varney invited Portnoy to assemble a progressive supergroup "Working on an album, which became the first in a long series of side projects of members of Dream Theater. The range consisted of Portnoy on drums, Petrucci on guitar, Tony Levin on bass, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess, who finished with the Dixie Dregs. The group took the name Liquid Tension Experiment, and act as a means by which the court Rudess Portnoy and Petrucci could once again join Dream Theater. In 1999 he accepted an offer to become the third full-time Dream Theater keyboardist, replacing Sherinian.
With yet another new member, Dream Theater entered BearTracker Studio once again to write and record their next album. Following an ultimatum to Portnoy, the label gave the band complete creative control. Track "Metropolis Part 1" which was written during the Falling Into Infinity sessions (but not used on this album), was removed from the platform for editing. They decided to expand the song 20 minutes in a concept album complete with a story revolving around themes such as reincarnation, murder and treason. To avoid to move the fan base, a tight veil of secrecy enveloped the writing process and recording. The only thing the fans knew before his release was a list that had been disclosed against the wishes of the group, and a release date. In 1999, Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory was released at the high critical acclaim. It was hailed as Dream Theater masterpiece by many fans and critics, even if are only reaching # 73 on U.S. charts.
The album was mixed by David Bottrill, but only a few of his mixes did on the final album. Much has been remixed by Kevin Shirley. The rest of the mixture can be heard in the band's official bootleg "The Making of Scenes from a memory ".
A massive world tour followed by recording of the album, taking over a year to complete, by far their biggest to that point. The concert reflects the theater aspect of the album. They played the entire scenes Memory album from beginning to end, with a screen Video on the wall behind the stage showing a companion narrative history of the album. In addition to playing the album in its entirety, the group also performed a second series of Dream Theater songs and some covers and improvisations of old stuff from Dream Theater. For an additional Special show at Roseland Ballroom in New York, actors were hired to play characters in the story, and a gospel choir was asked to play in certain areas of performance.
This show, the last North American date of the tour, was recorded for the first DVD release of the group. After many technical delays, the DVD, titled Metropolis 2000, was released in early 2001. Shortly after the group announced that an audio version of the concert, with all four hours long set-list (most of which had to be cut from the DVD to save space) would be released.
The cover for the CD version of the concert, titled Live Scenes from New York, described one of the early logos Dream Theater (Images and words burning heart of the time, modeled on the Sacred Heart of Christ) modified to show an apple (as in "Big Apple") instead of the heart, and the New York skyline, including the twin towers of World Trade Center, in the flame above. In an unfortunate coincidence, the album was released on the same date as Sept. 11. The album was quickly recalled by group and was re-released with illustrations revised later.

Put the whole ordeal behind them, Dream Theater once again entered BearTracker studios to record their sixth studio album. Four years after their first request EastWest to allow them to release a double album, they finally had their chance with Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. The first disc consisted five runs of 713 minutes and the second disc is entirely devoted to the title song of 42 minutes, which is to date the longest song Dream Theater has written. The genesis of this song came when Rudess wrote what would become the "opening" of "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" and the group took different melodies and ideas contained in the present and expanded them into chapters of a comprehensive story.
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence ended up being very well received by critics and the press. It was the most publicity of Dream Theater albums since Awake, debuting on the Billboard charts at # 46 and the Billboard Internet charts at # 1. Throughout the next year and a half they toured the world once more, with a live show expanded including privileged few special "album cover" Concerts (see cover story songs, below), in which they played Master of Puppets by Metallica and Iron Maiden is the number of the Beast in their entirety.
Train of Thought and Live at Budokan (20032004)
In 2003, Dream Theater entered the studio to write and record another album. Since Scenes from a Memory was written and recorded simultaneously in the studio, in the spirit of change, the group took a different approach by setting aside three weeks for writing prior to registration. In the midst of recording sessions for the album, a special tour with two other groups, progressive metal, Fates Warning and Queensrche, was undertaken in North America. The "Escape from the Studio tour in the U.S.," as he was referred to Dream Theater promotional material, presented Queensrche and Dream Theater as a co-starring with Fates Warning acts perform support functions, act. As a finale for each concert there was still scope in which both Dream Theater and Queensrche together on stage at the same time, often playing covers.
At the end of the tour, Dream Theater returned in the studio to finish recording their seventh album, Train of Thought. They focused more on writing a great song album oriented a mindset inspired by covering Master of Puppets and the number of the beast on a concert tour earlier. Accordingly, its metal more straight-forward of these two albums seemed to creep into Train of Thought. The album was a critical success, but it has alienated much fan of Dream Theater [Who?] who preferred traditional progressive rock, like Yes or King Crimson. Still, he seemed to enlarge Dream Theater fan base a new territory, the capture of many metal fans more.
Another world tour followed, during which Dream Theater served as a support act for one of their major influences, Yes. A small North American tour was completed by two bands, after which Dream Theater continued Tour the world with their so-called "An Evening With Dream Theater" shows.
Their next step was to release another live CD / DVD combination this time recorded at the famous Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo, Japan on their train tour of the world thought. Live at Budokan was released on October 5 2004, and additionally supported Dream Theater reputation as one of the first live acts in progressive metal.

After thinking promotional tour, Dream Theater entered the Hit Factory studio in New York to record their eighth album. As it turned out, they would be the last group most famous record in this studio, and after they finished their last session, the lights were out in the studio forever.
Octavarium was released on June 7, 2005, and took the band's sound in another direction. Among the eight songs is a continuation of Portnoy's "Twelve Step" saga ("The Root of All Evil", steps 6-7 in the 12-step plan) and the title song, an epic musical Versatile 24 minutes rivaling "A Change of Seasons". Octavarium received mixed reviews from fans and was the subject of intense debate. Octavarium is the last album under their agreement of seven albums with Elektra Records, which had inherited the contract upon its absorption of EastWest Records.
Dream Theater is many tours in 2005 and 2006 to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a group, including a headlining spot on Gigantour. In addition, it is the unexpected appearance of musicians Russell Allen, Burton C. Bell and Dave Mustaine, who joined the band on stage to perform parts of the song.
Dream Theater Gigantour later left and went on their own concert series. Several concerts have been recorded and made Fanclubs. The tour concluded with a 20th anniversary show at Radio City Music Hall in New York April 1, 2006. Although the show had minimal promotion, it was sold days after tickets were made available. The show, which was recorded for a CD / DVD called Score released on 29 August 2006 by Rhino Records, was the first concert of the group accompanied by an orchestra (the "Octavarium Orchestra").

The title jokingly refers to the song "Pull Me Under", the only major band radio hit. It also includes three remixes songs from their second album Images and Words, five edited versions of songs already published, and a track of a single B-side. Unlike most compilations, Greatest Hits, Dream Theater has actively participated in album, coming up with the tracklisting they felt best represented their musical career.
Mike Portnoy, after the release of Greatest Hit, organized a new tour called Progressive Nation 2008. Unlike previous Dream Theater tours, performances were held in cities they had not visited before in the past (such as Vancouver, Canada) or the cities they had not played in several years. The visit also marked the first time since the publication of images and words, where the band performed in small halls and theaters.
After this tour, the band released a DVD called Chaos in Motion 20072008, a compilation of songs from the tour supporting their ninth album, Systematic Chaos. It There were two sets of DVD released. One was a regular two-disc set, while the Special Edition set contains three CDs of music that goes with the DVD. It was published on September 30, 2008.

Logo and Images
Dream Theater wordmark and "Majesty" symbol
Despite the band being forced to change their name, Dream Theater adopted a custom logo (known as the Majesty symbol) and word-symbol that appeared on the vast majority of their promotional material and on the cover of every studio album by Dream Theater. The majesty symbol is derived from Mary, Queen of Scots brand, which was reworked by Charlie Dominici for use on the album artwork for When Dream and Day Unite. It consists of a capital Phi, a capital Mu, and Lambda capital.
Shows Live
Throughout their career, Dream Theater shows have gradually become larger, more numerous and varied. The most obvious example is their rotation policy set list. It's every night of each visit has its list of game developed by Portnoy using a painstaking process that ensures its uniqueness. Factors such as lists compiled from the previous cities are taken into account to ensure that people who see Dream Theater multiple times in the same area will not see the same songs performed twice, and even the list drawn from the last time the band was in a city is taken into account for the benefit of fans who see the band on successive visits.
Petrucci and Rudess duel in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2008).
To make this possible, the group prepares to play the majority of its catalog at any performance, depending on what Portnoy decides program for that evening. This process also requires the use of a complex lighting system to load pre-configured lighting effects based on individual songs.
Some of Dream Theater partners pass most notable include Deep Purple, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, King's X, Marillion, Megadeth, In Flames, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Queensrche, Riverside, Spock's Beard, Fear Factory, Enchant, Symphony X, and then click Yes. Visits by groups world full since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, were mainly so-called "An Evening with ..." There is also a significant amount of humor, casualness and improvisation tied to a concert of Dream Theater. In the midst of "A Change of Seasons" it is quite common for themes such as the Major League Baseball and The Simpsons to be quoted, and Rudess routinely modifies his solo section in the song and others, often playing the section ragtime "When the waters break" from Liquid Tension Experiment 2. Several songs on Once in a LiveTime include snippets of other songs, such that "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee." Other quotations include "Mary Had a Little Lamb" during "Endless Sacrifice "on the Gigantour, a calliope-inspired break between verses of" Under a Glass Moon ", a quote from" Do not Cry for Me, Argentina "from the main melody played by Petrucci when running solo intro of" Through Her Eyes "in Buenos Aires Turkish March at a concert in Istanbul, and the opening riff of Rush "A Passage to Bangkok" at a show in Bangkok, Thailand. The most recent "20th Anniversary World Tour" Rudess has even thrown in a short "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" theme of a break during "Endless Sacrifice", and at a concert in Israel, he began a spontaneous "Hava-Nagilla" later, accompanied by rest of the band.
Sometimes an audience member is randomly selected to perform on stage, an example of what can be seen during the drum solo Portnoy on Live at Budokan DVD. There were also numerous interpretations impromptu "Happy Birthday" when a band member or crew has a birthday for a date tour, which will normally result in a birthday cake to be launched on the subject.
Maybe the best example of Dream Theater structure together is unpredictable for the time Derek Sherinian with the band. At some shows all group members instruments swapped and a recall that the fictional band called Nightmare Theatre. They are usually performed a cover of Deep Purple "Perfect Strangers" and on one occasion, Ozzy Osbourne's "Suicide Solution". At some shows, Sherinian, Petrucci and Portnoy would take the stage together under the name "Nicky lemons and Brothers migraine. Sherinian, wearing a feather boa and novelty sunglasses, would interpret a pop-punk song entitled "I Do not Like You "with Petrucci and Portnoy support. Chaos in Motion tour in several concerts before" Trial of Tears ", Portnoy and Petrucci would changing positions and playing Van Halen "Eruption".
Dream Theater wider audience as a headliner was 20,000 in Santiago, Chile, Dec. 6, 2005. It was during their first tour of South American countries other than Brazil (where they had visited in 1997 and 1998). The show was released on DVD by Portnoy's Records YtseJam.
In the score and Chaos in Motion DVD, animation accompanied parts of songs, showing the band playing the music as cartoon characters. Score of DVD, during the song Octavarium, the band is seen performing in a labyrinth shape octagonal. As the movie continues Jordan Rudess spontaneously turns into Santa Claus and John Petrucci is on fire. In "The Dark Eternal Night" from the Chaos in Motion DVD, the band battles against a monster by shooting fireballs guitars, throwing drum sticks, and shouting.
In 2008, Dream Theater has begun the "Progressive Nation '08" tour with Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and 3. The visit is the result of Mike Portnoy, who said, "I were interested in getting a package like this for many years now. With all the festivals and package tours that go through America, I talked with our manager and agent for over 10 years doing something that focuses on the more progressive, musician-oriented side of hard rock and metal. I decided it was time to stop talking about maintenance, lace and finally walking. "

Mike Portnoy has begun a series of bootlegs official response to Dream Theater fans affinity 'for live versions of their concerts. Dream Theater is one of the most active in smuggling in the progressive metal genre. Since their first show in New York as Majesty, fans have logged nearly all programs that Dream Theater have played (Sometimes there are three or four versions of a single concert), and some very elaborate and professional recordings have been released.
However, not all members of the band tolerates the release of Dream Theater bootlegs. Portnoy is a member of the most pro-piracy, because he was an avid collector of bootlegs well in his youth and maintains its own personal archive of Dream Theater material in his basement. Petrucci and Labrie expressed their opposition to the registration people their concerts. Petrucci takes issue with bootleggers because he prefers audience members to focus on musicians on stage, not the level adjustments on their recording device. LaBrie, on the other hand, argues that smuggling takes possession and control Dream Theater performances away from the band themselves and into the hands of the public. Myung has expressed mild opposition to smuggling, but in some interviews said it is not particularly big issue with him.
Dream Theater have released a series of official bootlegs, demos and other rarities YtseJam Records, headed by Portnoy. They include demos before the band released official albums and many shows, including shows where the group has covered a particular album. Albums covered include The Dark Side of the Moon, Made in Japan, Master of Puppets, and the number of the beast.
cover songs
Dream Theater is known to cover the work of other artists throughout their careers. They took this practice to a new level during the promotional tour for Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Three special events, each in Barcelona, Chicago and New York, they covered Master Metallica album of puppets in its entirety after a full set of Dream Theater material. It was a surprise for fans, as there was no evidence that this happens, the exception being announced that the concerts in question, which were on the second night of a two-stand nights in each city would be "very special". This tradition can probably be traced back to one of Mike Portnoy's favorite bands, Phish, which began a series of show "musical costumes" of entire albums of other artists each Halloween beginning in 1994. Portnoy designed this "album cover" the first of a series of concerts to be played as tributes to groups that have influenced in training and development of Dream Theater. Covers the entire split many fans who attended the shows, with people who say they went a concert of Dream Theater to see the original music and not the work of another artist. Others, however, said he was a bonus, not a replacement for a concert of Dream Theater normal as a regular concert was played yesterday.
On the next step of the tour they covered Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast and received a response similar to Master of Puppets, but it was already known that a lid was to be executed that night because tour itinerary included two successive concerts in one city. On October 11 May 2005 Dream Theater covered Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon. Dream Theater official website said that the second set the second night in Amsterdam, London, Buenos Aires So Paulo, and Tokyo (October 11th, October 25th, December 4th, December 11 and January 13 respectively), and also the second round of the January 15 show in Osaka would be a classic album covered in its entirety. The Dark Side of the Moon was played again on October 25 in London. However, Buenos Aires (December 4) and So Paulo (December 11) the classic album "was played Dream Theater's own Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory to compensate for not visited Argentina and Brazil in their Metropolis 2000 tour. On January 13, 2006 (Tokyo) and 15 (Osaka), Dream Theater covered Deep Purple's live album Made in Japan. Portnoy said he expected to see more coverage, but refuses to reveal when it will occur, or what the album will be covered.
During of Gigantour 2005, Dream Theater did a cover of "Cemetery Gates" Pantera as a tribute to "Dimebag" Darrell Lance Abbott. As a bonus, they had Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory, and Russell Allen of Symphony X do guest vocals and Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, the only major solo of the song.
In March 2006, Dream Theater has played Rush rare song "Jacob's Ladder" at a show in Toronto. John Petrucci said a few days later in Asbury Park, New Jersey before the performance of the night, "Rush did not play, so we thought we'd play for them."
In addition, Dream Theater released several cover songs live on their EP A Change of Seasons, including songs from Elton John, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Journey, Dixie Dregs and Kansas.
In 2008, they recorded a version of Iron Maiden "To Tame a Land" for a compilation entitled Maiden Heaven Kerrang magazine. This song was later included on the special edition of Black Clouds and Silver Linings
Dream Theater also recorded a number of songs for their album cover 2009 Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The songs came as a bonus disc version in special editions of the album.
Dream Theater played "Hava Nagila, "the traditional Jewish song, during" Metropolis Pt 1:. The Miracle and the Sleeper "at a sold-out concert in Tel Aviv, Israel on June 16, 2009.
On August 14, 2009 during a show in Toronto, Dream Theater played the song Rush "The Camera Eye", which was originally published on Rush's Moving Pictures album.
